The Flocking Crane

The egrets marched behind the crane.
One-two, step, step, one-two.

So proud, so bold, he led in vain.

One-two, step, step, one-two.

He marched them into the farmer’s field

One-two, step, step, one-two.

And took in greed the garden yield.

One-two, step, step, one-two

Then one by one, the egrets fell.

One-two, squack, squack, one-two.

Struck by stones and dragged to hell.
One-two, pop, pop, one-two.

Shield for the crane, who stole away.
Head high, so proud, he flew.

“Too smart to be caught,” he would say.

New flocks believed this was true.

And crane marched back to farm, unfazed.
One-two, step, step, one-two.

While egrets marched into their graves.
One-two, step, step, one-two.
