Fatigue
One of these days
We’ll get out of this house and go to that place
And there won’t be a limit to how long we stay
Or how many other kids ask you to play
And we can ride rides or go to a game
Or dance in a crowd or fly on a plane
And I won’t have to go just a little insane
Wondering if the crowd around us cared at all
That despite your big voice, your lungs are still small
That despite how I try, I can’t do it all
Would they catch you if they saw you starting to fall?
If I yelled out for help, would they listen at all?
So often I imagine my heart might grow
As big as it feels.
Surrounding you
like a shield.
Protecting you from that crowd
who suddenly decided
That because you’re so small
We’re not even here.
